This July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month to show our continued support for protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities. Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate disability identity, community, and culture, and to mark the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th.

At Sojourner Center, we strive to build a place that feels safe and accessible to everyone who walks through our doors. Each year, a committee of staff members reviews the accessibility of our campus to ensure it meets or exceeds ADA compliance standards. The walkthrough is an opportunity to involve our community in finding new ways to assess and improve our spaces. These improvements were included in our Emergency Shelter renovations, adding in bars to help with mobility and making sure each room has standardly accessible doors.

According to a national study from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, people with disabilities experience domestic and sexual violence at a rate 2.5 times higher than those without disabilities. For people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, that rate is five times higher. Many people in this community face an increased risk because they may not have the ability to physically defend themselves or understand and recognize signs of abuse.

Our case managers and staff are prepared to provide resources and assistance to survivors with disabilities. Living with a disability is not something to hide or fix, but rather a part of the beauty of human diversity. Everyone deserves to feel included and respected, regardless of how they identify.
