In honor of Juneteenth, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible woman who inspired our organization’s name, Sojourner Truth.
Sojourner Truth was a renowned African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist who lived in the 19th century. Born into slavery in New York, Sojourner Truth escaped to freedom with her infant daughter in 1826. She went on to become a powerful orator, traveling the country to speak about the evils of slavery and the importance of women’s rights.
Sojourner Truth’s unwavering commitment to justice and equality inspired generations of activists and advocates, including the founders of Sojourner Center. Our organization is named after this incredible woman to honor her legacy and to continue her work in creating a more just and equitable world.
This Juneteenth, let us remember the powerful legacy of Sojourner Truth and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
