Trauma-informed care is a holistic approach to care that focuses on the impact of traumatic experiences on a person’s physical, mental and social health. It shifts the focus from asking, “What is wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” By doing so, service providers can better understand participants’ experiences and provide more effective care. Organizations that adopt this approach are equipped to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in participants and actively avoid re-traumatization.
Sojourner Center recognizes that the benefits of trauma-informed care extend to our participants, direct service providers and administration. Implementing its core principles in our organization has allowed participants and staff the opportunity to engage more fully, develop trusting relationships and improve long-term outcomes.
The core principles of trauma-informed care include:
- Creating a safe environment
- Building trust and transparency in decision making
- Providing peer support
- Promoting collaboration
- Empowering patients and staff
- Addressing biases and stereotypes
By adopting the trauma-informed approach to care, we are empowered to create a safe and supportive environment for our participants, promote healing and recovery and more efficiently achieve our goals.
