When Jason Marino learned about Sojourner Center, he wanted to find a way to get involved. For his birthday this past month, he raised $1,200 toward essential items for survivors.

He took himself on a celebratory shopping spree, not for himself, but for survivors and their families. He purchased many diapers, 50 pairs of children’s shoes, and 30 bottles of lotion. Because 60% of survivors at Sojourner Center are children, those items go beyond meeting basic needs… they create moments of comfort and confidence.

“No matter who you are or what you do, many of us could end up in situations where we experience unpredictable hardship. Growing up in an environment out of my control, I felt a connection to your mission to help those going through similar situations.”

Jason’s generosity extends into his work as well. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, he focuses on restoring strength and stability, whether he is teaching a patient fall prevention techniques or designing a nutrition plan. That same attention to what people need shows up in his donation. These items ease the pressure survivors feel to meet basic needs for themselves and their families.

“Providing clean diapers, healthy skin and good footwear to, metaphorically, run toward something or away from something, as safely as possible, aligned with both my personal and professional values.”

Jason’s thoughtfulness points to something simple: knowing what someone needs and showing up with it. His support reminds survivors that people in their community are paying attention and ready to help.
