At Sojourner Center, every day looks a little different for our Emergency Shelter Case Managers. One thing remains the same: their deep commitment to walking alongside survivors through every step of their journey. Recently, one of our Case Managers started the day with a bittersweet goodbye to a survivor who had faced numerous barriers but was leaving the shelter to reunite with family in another state. The survivor, a refugee who had navigated language and cultural challenges, blossomed during her time in our program. With consistent support, she went from considering returning to her abuser to leaving with confidence, stability, and a smile on her face.

Our Case Manager facilitated a resolution between two survivors navigating shared living spaces, finding a solution that respected both privacy and unique needs. These moments highlight how shelter life is not just about meeting physical needs, but creating a respectful and supportive community. The day continued with encouraging updates: one survivor preparing for job interviews and an art show, another celebrating her first few weeks at a new job after overcoming ID barriers, and a third who recently transitioned from donating plasma to working as a full-time EMT, all while parenting and managing legal appointments.

As the evening settled in, the work didn’t stop. From helping at the support desk to catching up on case notes, each task supports the safety, healing, and empowerment of the survivors we serve. This day was filled with resilience, victories, and human connection. It’s just one example of how our shelter team shows up with heart, flexibility, and fierce dedication to helping survivors rebuild their lives.
