Women’s History Month honors the resilience of women who have shaped history, including survivors who have turned their experiences into a force for change. At Sojourner Center, we see this transformation daily as survivors step into leadership roles and advocate for a future free from violence. Here are some noteworthy survivor-turned-advocates.
Tarana Burke – Founder of the #MeToo Movement
A survivor of sexual violence, Tarana Burke launched the Me Too movement in 2006 to support survivors and amplify their voices. What started as a grassroots effort became a global movement, shining a light on the pervasiveness of sexual violence.
Mildred Muhammad – Advocate for Domestic Violence Survivors
The ex-wife of the D.C. Sniper, Mildred Muhammad, survived years of abuse and later became a powerful advocate. She educates others on coercive control and emotional abuse, helping survivors recognize warning signs and find safety.
Many Sojourner Center survivors use their experiences to help others—whether by sharing their stories, volunteering their time, or breaking generational cycles of abuse for their own families. Their stories prove that healing is possible and that survival is just the beginning.
