Since joining Sojourner Center in early 2024, Samantha Tiburcio has become a consistent and compassionate volunteer in our children’s game room. Samantha helps cultivate a safe space where kids can laugh, express themselves, and simply enjoy being children. She builds trust and aims to restore a sense of normalcy for children who have experienced the trauma of violence.
“Volunteering at Sojourner Center holds deep personal meaning for me,” Samantha shared. “I’ve seen how instability and fear can affect families. With my time in the game room, I hope to offer fun moments that feel safe and familiar.”
Samantha’s presence also provides a valuable opportunity for parents. While she spends time with their children, caregivers can attend support groups, handle personal responsibilities, or take a moment to themselves, knowing their kids are in caring hands. It’s this kind of wraparound support that makes healing possible for the whole family.
“Working with the kids reminds me why kindness and patience are so important,” Samantha said. “It can help rebuild trust and show kids how much they are valued.”
She also emphasizes the power of creative expression in healing. According to Samantha, “games, art, and music can have a huge impact in how kids process their feelings and regain a sense of control and joy.”
“We are incredibly grateful for volunteers like Samantha who show up with open hearts and helping hands,” said Julie Peterson, Co-director of Sojourner Center. “Her time, energy, and care make a lasting difference.”
