Sheryl Langford has seen it all — almost.
Sheryl is Sojourner Center’s longest-tenured employee, starting in 1981 as a domestic violence advocate (a role that would now be described as a case manager). She served in that role for almost two decades as she watched Sojourner Center grow before her eyes.
“We started in a small two story residential building,” she said. “We’ve gone through many incarnations and growing pains over the years.”
Sheryl has since become a Jill-of-all-trades over the years. She has served as facilities manager, transitional program specialist, residential program specialist and most recently, a compliance & safety specialist.
“The agency has evolved and changed, and people need to be where the need is,” she said. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be part of this organization which is transforming lives in my community.
“I’m blessed to work somewhere where the organization’s mission correlates with my own personal mission,” she said.
Sheryl said she is inspired by the women she has seen transform their lives at the center, and their courage to seek help, find resources, and share their stories with other women.
“I’ve been deeply impacted by witnessing the power of the voice of these families as they rebuild their lives in the wake of domestic violence,” she said.
Sheryl said that many former residents have returned as program staff, or have found other roles within the organization — which is especially encouraging, since those currently staying at Sojourner Center can see them as role models for how they can escape domestic violence.
Langford said that over the years, many of Sojourner Center’s services have changed and developed to fit the community. But its core mission has remained the same, and the commitment to service has never waivered.
“We do our best work when we ask ourselves how we can best serve those who are seeking out our services,” she said.
