Pride Month is a time to recognize the contributions and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. Along with celebration, we must take time to advocate as the community continues to face challenges, including domestic violence.

Research shows that domestic violence occurs at higher rates within the LGBTQ+ community. Bisexual individuals report some of the highest rates. Gay and lesbian individuals experience domestic violence at more than twice the rate of their heterosexual counterparts.

Understanding why requires looking at the broader context. Societal stigma and discrimination create isolation that makes it harder to seek help. When survivors do reach out, they often encounter resources that aren’t designed with their specific experiences in mind. This gap can leave real needs unmet.

Sojourner Center serves every survivor, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Our commitment is to provide an environment where people feel seen and supported as they work toward safety and healing.

If someone you know in the LGBTQ+ community is experiencing violence, learn how you can support them here.
