Leaving an abusive relationship is an act of tremendous courage. Even after a survivor separates from their partner, the long-term impacts of abuse can continue to follow them. For Layla, choosing to leave her abusive relationship, after multiple attempts to remain safely separated, was a powerful step toward reclaiming her independence. Although she had the support of friends and family, circumstances made it difficult for her to stay safe on her own. She knew she needed a secure environment where she and her children could continue their journey toward stability.

When Layla arrived at Sojourner Center, she found not only safety but also a compassionate team ready to stand beside her. Partnering closely with her case manager and Emergency Shelter support staff, Layla began to rebuild her life on her own terms. She returned to full-time employment, connected her children with therapeutic services to support their healing, and made intentional financial changes to strengthen her credit.

Throughout her time with us, Layla has been a strong advocate for herself and her family. Today, she is celebrating an important milestone: a scheduled move-in date with Sojourner Center’s Transitional Housing Program. This next step allows her to continue building a future rooted in confidence, empowerment, and independence.

At Sojourner Center, we walk alongside survivors as they make these deeply personal decisions, offering care that honors their strength and supports their healing. Every survivor deserves the opportunity to reclaim their life. Layla’s journey is a powerful reminder that with safety and support, healing is possible.
