Maricopa County’s domestic-violence victims don’t have to fear for their four-legged companions anymore.
Phoenix’s Sojourner Center opened its Pet Companion Center today. Shelter resident Robert says he’s so glad his cat, Clark, can be with him.
“Clark is so important,” he says, “[that] … I would die for him. I would live in a car for him, if I needed to.”
Robert’s mom, Jennifer – who came here from Washington state with almost nothing but her car, her son and Clark – says the fluffy orange tabby is making a tough time a lot better.
“You know, one foot after another, taking baby steps,” she says, “but having Clark here is really gonna make our days a lot brighter.”
Right now, Sojourner’s Pet Center can accommodate eight dogs, eight cats, and has special facilities for birds and fish. Residents are responsible for feeding, exercising and socializing with their pets.
