Kaleigh Nielsen is the Community Outreach Coordinator at Sojourner Center. Our Community Outreach team consists of dedicated case managers who are trained to safety plan, provide resources and work through the impacts of domestic violence for those within our community who need it most. We have been able to see families stay in their homes and maintain some sort of consistency through the turmoil of abuse through the support of this program.

What originally brought you to the nonprofit field and Sojourner Center?

“I first started at Sojourner Center as an intern in 2015. I wanted to experience working with survivors of domestic violence. I’ve stayed here for 7 years because I love supporting survivors through their healing journey and reestablishing their new lives.”

What are some client interactions that have impacted you?

“Being able to witness someone’s growth over a short period of time in Outreach has taught me so much. I have learned and witnessed how much strength people have within themselves to keep pushing forward.”

Why is DV Awareness month so important to the community?

“I firmly believe that knowledge is power. Domestic violence awareness is so important because it opens up the conversation about what healthy relationships look like and what resources are available for those in need.”

What has been one of the most impactful moments working here?

“I worked with a human trafficking survivor for about 2 years. I watched her push through all obstacles to become self-sufficient and happy on her own. She taught me that no matter how small the step is, any movement forward is growth. Even when she felt that she took two steps back, she learned from it and continued on in the right direction.”

We want to thank Kaleigh and the Community Outreach team for their work to support participants out in the community as well as spread awareness for domestic violence and its impacts.
