Knowing how to respond when someone discloses domestic or sexual violence is a critical step in a survivor’s journey. Too often, survivors choose not to report abuse or seek support because of the reactions they receive from friends, family members, or others they trust. Whether they are believed or not, can profoundly shape someone’s healing process.
Start By Believing is a public awareness and action campaign designed to break the cycle of violence by changing the way we respond to survivors of abuse. Since 2011, thousands of individuals across the country have pledged to “hear you, support you, and Start By Believing.” Because abusers often commit harm more than once, compassionate and informed responses are essential, not only for survivors but for preventing future violence.
This campaign empowers communities to respond with empathy, respect, and support. Instead of questioning or doubting someone’s experience, Start By Believing encourages us to listen without judgment and ask how we can help. This simple shift, from asking “why” to offering support, can make all the difference.
Ending violence begins with how we show up for survivors. Learn more about how you can show up for someone affected by sexual violence: https://www.sojournercenter.org/for-friends-family/
