October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and it’s a critical time to remind ourselves that domestic violence is not just a private issue—it’s a community issue. From neighbors to business owners, every member of a community has the potential to create a safer environment for survivors and those at risk of abuse. One of the most powerful actions someone can take is to be aware of the signs of domestic violence and know how to offer support in a non-intrusive way. Whether it’s noticing a pattern of isolation or overhearing concerning interactions, small observations can lead to big interventions when handled with care. By cultivating a community of active bystanders, we can build a safety net for those who might otherwise feel trapped in silence.
Beyond recognizing the signs, community members can also play a proactive role by partnering with local shelters like Sojourner Center. During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, individuals, businesses, schools and healthcare providers, can get involved by hosting fundraisers and donation drives.
Hosting a fundraiser not only brings awareness to domestic violence but also provides critical financial support that Sojourner Center relies on to offer safety and trauma-informed services to survivors. Sojourner Center’s Donation Resource Center fully stocks our shelter and allows survivors in our programs to shop for all their needs using a voucher system. This means we are always in need of new items like bedding, towels, hygiene items and children’s clothing.
When the community steps up, we send a clear message that domestic violence has no place in our neighborhoods and that help is always within reach.
