Tara* found herself in a dire situation—abandoned by her partner, who fled to their home country, leaving Tara and their two young boys homeless. With nowhere to turn, they lived out of an unreliable vehicle, uncertain of where their next meal would come from or how they would survive another day.

Tara refused to give up. Her determination to provide a better life for her children led her to Sojourner Center’s Emergency Shelter, where she began her journey toward empowerment and self-sufficiency.

While at Sojourner Center, Tara received support and even more—she thrived. She embraced the comprehensive resources Sojourner Center offers, including our Transitional Housing program, which allowed her to focus on stabilizing her family. With access to case management, life skills training and essential resources, Tara worked diligently toward securing a supportive housing voucher, enabling her to afford a home for her and her sons. Once they moved into their own home, Tara continued to seek the support she needed from Sojourner Center. She joined our Community Outreach Program to ensure ongoing access to case management, safety planning and group services. We were also able to assist her with a referral for Lay Legal services, helping her navigate her divorce and child custody case.

Today, Tara and her two boys are thriving. They have safe, stable housing, the boys are excelling in school, and Tara is self-sufficient. Tara’s story reminds us that with the right support, survivors can rise above even the most challenging circumstances.
