When we think of domestic violence support, most people immediately picture shelters. But beyond providing a safe place to stay, Sojourner Center offers a wide array of specialized services designed to empower survivors on their journey to long-term healing and independence. One of those lesser known but vital services is Sojourner Center’s Lay Legal Program.
Survivors of domestic violence often find themselves in court, having to face their abusers for sensitive matters such as orders of protection, divorce, legal decision-making and parenting time. Navigating these legal procedures can be overwhelming, especially for someone trying to rebuild their life after trauma. Sojourner Center recognizes the critical role legal support plays in empowering survivors and providing them with the resources they need to protect themselves and their families.
That’s where our Lay Legal Program comes in. Sojourner Center is one of the few domestic violence shelter in Maricopa County that offers in-court lay legal services. Our advocates are specially trained to assist survivors through these challenging court processes. They provide information on navigating family court and securing orders of protection. While they don’t represent clients as attorneys, they guide survivors through every step of the legal process, ensuring they feel supported and informed as they seek justice and safety.
If you’re passionate about helping survivors gain the legal support they need to rebuild their lives, your contributions can make a real difference in a survivor’s journey to safety and independence. https://www.sojournercenter.org/get-involved/donate-funds/
