Pet Companion Shelter
Sojourner Center recognizes the importance of pets as family members by providing shelter to families and their pets fleeing domestic violence. This service is provided at no cost. Only 5% of domestic violence shelters in the U.S. accept pets, and we are the only domestic violence shelter in Maricopa County which accepts pets. Anyone in Maricopa County receiving domestic violence services may request pet sheltering from Sojourner Center.
- While in the Pet Companion Shelter, animals are able to heal from their trauma by participating in an Enrichment Program designed to promote social interaction and critical thinking while decreasing stress.
- Cats and dogs will be spayed/neutered if needed, and will receive vaccines. Any other medical needs of your pet will be discussed with you prior to providing care, except in an emergency.
- A family visitation room is available so they can spend quality time with their pets. We encourage pet parents to come and care for their pet every day.
- Sojourner Center contracts with Lost Our Home Pet Rescue to provide trained, daily care for pets at our shelter to ensure each pet’s individual needs are met.
If you are concerned about your pet’s safety when leaving a domestic violence situation, please complete the form below. We will contact you about availability of our limited shelter space. We’ll care for your pets as if they were ours, because pets are family, too.
