Advocacy, Resources & Referrals

Lay Legal Advocacy

Victims of domestic violence often have to face their abusers in court for matters related to orders of protection, divorce, legal decision making and parenting time. Sojourner Center is the only domestic violence shelter in Maricopa County offering in-court lay legal services. Advocates provide individualized support in and out of the courtroom for legal issues related to domestic violence, obtaining 911 cell phones and referrals.

Role of the Advocate

The domestic violence advocate is not a lawyer or an employee of the court. The advocate is an employee of Sojourner Center, trained in legal advocacy for domestic violence victims.

Order of Protection

The order of protection is a court order issued by a justice of the peace or a judge in a domestic violence proceeding to protect the victim from further violence.

“I am most impressed with Sojourner’s seriousness, true inter-disciplinary integration, and their willingness to spotlight the too-hidden problems in domestic violence cases in family courts. Their work on traumatic brain injury is cutting edge and important for the domestic violence field.”
