Lay Legal Services
Lay Legal Advocacy
Victims of domestic violence often have to face their abusers in court for matters related to protective orders, divorce, legal decision-making, and parenting time. Sojourner Center is the only domestic violence shelter in Maricopa County offering legal services in court. Advocates provide one-on-one support in and out of the courtroom for legal matters related to domestic violence, obtaining 911 cell phones and referrals.
Role of the Advocate
The domestic violence advocate is not a lawyer or an employee of the court. The advocate is an employee of Sojourner Center, trained in legal advocacy for domestic violence victims.
Order of Protection
The order of protection is a court order issued by a justice of the peace or a judge in a domestic violence proceeding to protect the victim from further violence.
