Statement by the Board of Directors of Sojourner Center on Management Team Transition

April 3, 2017

The Board of Directors and staff of Sojourner Center are fully committed to the organization’s mission of transforming lives and creating a world free from domestic violence. Now in its 40th year, Sojourner Center has helped thousands of women, men, children and pets traumatized by abuse discover hope and find the path to futures free from violence.

It is the duty of the Board of Directors to ensure Sojourner Center implements not only the highest quality programming and support for those we serve, but the highest standards of professionalism and fiscal responsibility as a non-profit organization.

In keeping with this commitment, the Board of Directors has decided to make a change in the organization’s leadership to best ensure Sojourner Center fulfills its mission now and in the future. Effective immediately, the board has relieved Maria E. Garay-Serratos of her duties as Chief Executive Officer of the organization. The board has also relieved Robert Knechtel, Chief Operating Officer and Teri Hauser, Chief Advancement Officer of their duties.

Additionally, in a minor restructuring of our programs, we have combined several positions to more efficiently serve the individuals in our care while providing some cost savings to the organization.

It is important to note that the day-to-day operations of Sojourner Center will continue as usual in the upcoming days and weeks. There will be no immediate changes to any services or programs provided by Sojourner Center as part of this transition. The clients we serve should see no change or impact on the services provided by the organization, and the organization is not in financial distress.

To ensure the continuity of services provided by Sojourner Center, the Board of Directors has named longtime health care executive Carrie Borgen as Interim Executive Director. Carrie’s extensive background in the health care industry and executive leadership experience make her well-equipped to help Sojourner Center during this period of transition. Additionally, Ned Blum, Chief Financial Officer, will remain in his current role with the organization.

In the coming months, the Board of Directors and new leadership of Sojourner Center will conduct a thorough review of the organization’s programs and initiatives to ensure they are sustainable and consistent with the organization’s core mission, as any non-profit agency should do from time to time.

And, the Board of Directors will immediately begin a search process to fill the positions included in this transition.

The Board of Directors thanks Maria, Robert and Teri for their service to Sojourner Center and their work on behalf of those we serve. The board simply felt that this is the right time to make a leadership change to better position the organization for the future.
