PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) –
A new company is teaming up with a domestic violence shelter to provide free moving services for women and children affected by abuse.
It’s something many of us take for granted: the freedom to move out, but for thousands of people right here in the Valley, it’s not so easy.
“He literally took me hostage. He took my car took my cellphone, beat me. I literally thought he was going to kill me,” said “Stacey.”
This woman whom we’ll call “Stacey” does not want to be identified because she’s a victim of domestic violence.
“The hatred, the manipulating, really isolating you from your family, I was never allowed to go see my mother,” she said.
“Stacey” said she was in an abusive relationship on and off for about five years.
“Maybe he’s clean, maybe he’s better, but they don’t get better,” said “Stacey.” “For any woman out there who thinks it’s going to stop. It doesn’t stop.”
She said the turning point was when “I was four months pregnant, and we got into a fight about money and he strangled and he hit me in the face while pregnant with his kid.”
But “Stacey” said moving out was still tough.
“It was either leave everything or just take what I could put in my car,” she said. “Luckily, I did have a friend who her and her husband could help me, but if it weren’t for them, a lot of women don’t have friends who will help you in a situation like that. They don’t want to get involved. No one wants to get involved.”
For that very reason, a new moving company “Burly Sons Moving and Storage is stepping in.
They’ll be giving free moving services through the Sojourner Center, a shelter for domestic violence victims.
“To help some of the children to help some of the families that are struggling,” said the company’s CEO Mitchell Keller.
“Many of the people that we have that stay with us are lower income and can’t really afford to move on, and that can be a reason why they ultimately stay with an abuser,” said Robert Knechtel with the Sojourner Center.
The hope is that this service will help empower the victims and make one less barrier for moving on to an abuse-free life.
“For a moving company to help is amazing,” said “Stacey.”
Burly Sons Moving and Storage will start this service in January.
